Why gyms and leisure centres waste energy

Rising energy prices meet round the clock demand.

From 24 hour gyms and heated pools to saunas and lighting, every kilowatt hour saved goes straight to the bottom line. For leisure operators, energy is the second biggest running cost after staff.

Much of it runs whether the floor is busy or empty. Air handling, pool pumps, hot water, lighting and standby equipment keep drawing power through the quiet hours.

The Gym Group. 70 gyms, one rollout.

The Gym Group is one of the UK's largest gym chains and runs its gyms around the clock. It became the UK's first carbon neutral gym and has set targets to reach net zero. To cut energy use without changing anything for members, it worked with Powerhub to fit voltage optimisation across 70 sites nationwide.

The challenge

Hundreds of gyms that never close

Treadmills, lighting, air handling and hot water run day and night. The aim was lower energy use and carbon across the estate with no change to the member experience.

The solution

Voltage optimisation, site by site

Powerhub fitted voltage optimisation at 70 sites, bringing mains voltage down to the level the equipment needs so every piece of kit draws less power.

The result

Over a million kWh a year

More than 1 million kWh and 211 tonnes of CO2 saved every year, with the investment paid back within 18 months.

Pulse energy monitoring

Every gym, pool and studio on one screen.

Pulse shows what each site used, what it saved and what is running when the floor is quiet. Operations teams see the whole estate and site managers get alerts on their phone.

Estate league table

Rank every site on energy per member or per square metre and spot the outliers fast.

Quiet hour control

See what runs overnight and cut the base load without closing the doors.

Alerts on the phone

Why choose Powerhub Solutions

Cutting costs where it counts.

We provide an energy management system for gyms and leisure operators that cuts energy use and running costs through tailored, data driven efficiency. It balances energy efficiency with the member experience, without affecting safety.

Immediate cost savings

Lower energy bills from the day the system goes live.

Minimal disruption

Installed around your opening hours, with no need to close the gym.

Sustainable and future proof

Supports carbon reduction and net zero targets.

Our own engineers

Surveys and installs by directly employed engineers, not subcontractors.

Savings you can prove

Every kWh measured in Pulse against an agreed baseline.

Built for estates

One partner for a single club or hundreds of sites.

How it works

From first call to verified savings in four steps.

1

Data review and survey

We study your half hourly data and walk the site to see where the energy goes.

2

Proposal in writing

You get the expected saving and payback for each site before anything is fitted.

3

Installed around opening hours

Our engineers fit around your timetable, so members can keep training.

4

Verified in Pulse

Savings are measured against the baseline every month and reported in plain English.

Questions

What gym and leisure operators ask us first.

Do we need to close the gym to install?

No. We fit around your opening hours, including 24 hour sites. The Gym Group had voltage optimisation fitted across 70 gyms with no change to the member experience.

How much can a gym or leisure centre save?

It depends on the site, which is why we look at your half hourly data first. The Gym Group saves over 1 million kWh a year across 70 sites, and The Snow Centre saw a 10% cost saving in its first seven weeks.

Does voltage optimisation affect gym equipment?

No. Voltage is brought down to a level that stays within the range UK equipment is designed for. Treadmills, lighting and air handling run as normal while drawing less power, and lower electrical stress can help equipment last longer.

Can it help with pools and spas?

Yes. Pumps, filters, air handling and heating are some of the biggest loads in a leisure centre. Voltage optimisation reduces their energy use, and Pulse Control can match pool plant and HVAC to how busy the site is.

How are the savings proven?

Every project is measured against a baseline in Pulse. You get monthly IPMVP savings reports in kWh, pounds and CO2 for finance and ESG reporting.

Do you work with multi site operators?

Yes. We work with single clubs, leisure trusts, hotel spas and national chains. Pulse shows every site on one screen with a league table across the estate.
